In the wake of the ball tampering saga that unfolded yesterday; there could be lesser doubt as to where the blame is gonna shift to? Steve Smith, for all his exploits as a batting phenomenon in the past 24 months; has now experienced or advertised a series of ill advised moments and team behaviors on the cricket field. While, in the past, reasons could not be attributed to their mental disintegration and brain fade; the sandpaper gate with its repercussions looming need no further explanation. However, it did seem surprising for a moment that The Aussies who have been advocating fair but hard cricket, accepted the charges of ball tampering without any hesitation. The ball is now in ICC court as they are the ones to decide the quantum of punishment on the team or the individual. Whatever happens; the baggy green reputation has been tarnished. Individual's will to win at all costs is now out in the open.
To gauge the severity of this moment of madness from the captain and the fairly new entrant (funny Bones Bancroft); it has shaken the whole leadership back Down Under. If any matter on the field warrants an explanation from the premier of the country; it cannot be taken lightly. The decision of the leadership group in a foreign land is now rightly being questioned by the leadership back home. The events in Capetown may spell doom for a lot of present cricketers and the most severe punishment may be reserved for the skipper for failing to restrain his men (or boys). It is to be seen however whether Cricket Australia resorts to temporary measure or sets an example for all and sundry. While all this happened, the attention shifted form the action in the middle to events elsewhere. Now, that is a real shame.
